In Paul Cullen’s exhibition, HTWW: devices, a modified world map, mechanical contrivances, and sets of diagrams are deployed through the gallery spaces.
Cullen’s interest in gardens, and such scientific sites as magnetic observatories, atmospheric monitoring and climatology stations, is apparent here. He has noted that climatology stations “comprise objects, buildings, and equipment, fenced off from the surrounding space, in the manner of an installation”. Space within scientific sites is configured by assemblages of the objects and equipment employed in measurement and data collection.
Cullen’s sculptural works are assemblages of objects too – chairs, tables, and world globes – directed towards a purposive purposelessness. In his diagrammatic drawings we find ladders, chairs, tape measures and laboratory flasks, grouped, coded and annotated.
