These nine works Scrabble with Janet are nine reflections on nine photographs which were reproduced in Michael King’s An Inward Sun a short popular history of Frame published after his large biography Wrestling with the Angel. This is a visual record rather than a literary one of Frame’s life. While reading the large biography, I was given a box of Woman’s Weeklies dated between 1954 and about 1985 from a neighbour. I began looking at the changing language of women’s grievances in the ‘agony aunt’ column and noted that the earlier advice tended to be ‘buck your ideas up’ orientated, while the advice from about 1962 onwards used Freudian analysis, with the writer’s themselves diagnosing themselves accordingly. I realised that Frame had these analysing techniques in the early 1940s probably via John Money, her psychology lecturer at Otago University. Her incomplete knowledge, and subsequent modelling of schizophrenia symptoms possibly led to her incarceration at Seacliff Mental Asylum. I began drawing, collaging, and painting small studies from these resources, which inset text into image. The result is a suite of nine visual scrabble and crossword conundrums, in a type of word play of which Frame was an acknowledged master. Michael Shepherd 2010. |
