CK Stead poet, novelist, critic. Born in Auckland, he began writing poetry while still at school, and published as a student. He was Professor of English at the University of Auckland from 1967 to 1986 when he stopped teaching to write full time. He is still Professor Emeritus. Stead has an international reputation as an expert on 20th century poetic Modernism and is a respected critic of New Zealand literature.
His awards for poetry include: the Jessie Mackay award, the New Zealand Book Award for poetry, the Kingís Lynn Poetry prize, the Hippocrates Prize for Poetry and Medicine, and the Sarah Broom prize. His Collected Poems 1951-2006 received a Montana Prize in 2009.
Other literary awards and prizes include: the Katherine Mansfield Short Story award, the New Zealand Book Award for fiction (twice), the Sunday Times/E.F.G. Private Bank short story prize.
Stead was awarded the C.B.E. in 1986 for services to New Zealand literature. In 2007 he was made a Member of the Order of New Zealand. In 2009 he received the Prime Ministerís Awards for Literary Achievement for Fiction. Several of his novels have been translated into European languages. Acknowledging his outstanding contributions to New Zealand poetry he was named The New Zealand Poet Laureate for 2015-2017.
Tara McLeod is described by Dr. Donald Kerr, F.L.S, Special Collections Librarian, University of Otago, as “the best limited edition hand-print book-maker in the country.”
McLeod established The Pear Tree Press in 1988 and produces a varied range of limited edition hand printed letterpress books and prints. His work is exhibited widely, and he is represented in major libraries and collections throughout the world.
