From Christchurch, Bing Dawe has sent these three stunning drawings from his series "Head Count", featuring Kawau – Black Shag. Due to a belief that black shag competed with fishermen for trout acclimatisation societies between 1890 and 1940 declared they could be shot. Research undertaken in New Zealand was to later prove this was not true. In 1986 shag became protected but with the proviso that if a shag should damage crops or commercial property they could be culled. (Reference:- http://www.TeAra.govt.nz/en/shags)
